Romance has always known what to do with October. Witches who keep their hearts locked up tighter than their spellbooks, vampires with centuries of brooding behind them, a ghost who should not be this charming, and small towns that go all-in on jack-o'-lanterns: spooky season is made for falling in love. Here are our favorite Halloween romance books, from cozy witchy reads to darker romantasy, plus a few spooky-season romance movies and shows to put on when you need a break from turning pages.
A note on heat: where we mention it, it comes from how the book itself is described. Where we don't, check the book page before you buy.
Witchy Romance
The witch romance is the jack-o'-lantern of the genre: warm, glowing and impossible to resist in October. Start here if you want magic, family secrets and a love story that has to get past a curse or a coven's rules.
Practical Magic β Alice Hoffman
For generations the Owens women have been blamed for everything that goes wrong in their Massachusetts town, and sisters Gillian and Sally grew up as outsiders because of it. Alice Hoffman's novel follows the two of them as adults, still tangled up in family magic and in the trouble love seems to bring Owens women. Lyrical, a little dark, and the definition of an autumn reread.

Twilight (2008)

A Discovery of Witches (2018, series)
The adaptation of Deborah Harkness's All Souls books, with Teresa Palmer as Diana Bishop and Matthew Goode as Matthew Clairmont. Lush settings and a slow-burn forbidden romance.
The Vampire Diaries (2009, series)

What Makes a Great Halloween Romance?
The best Halloween romances use the season the way a good costume does: as a little bit of magic that lets the characters be braver than usual. Witches, ghosts and vampires raise the stakes, a haunted house or a small town's festival sets the mood, and the love story stays front and center. Some lean cozy and funny, some lean dark and dramatic, but they all deliver the same thing: a few delicious shivers and a happily ever after.
